Same film, different audio descriptions: describing foreign films from a functional perspective

Abstract The article discusses a functional approach to audio describing foreign films. First, model of description (AD) is outlined, aimed at identifying priorities in audio-visual content with view determining AD macro- and micro-strategies. Second, the skopos theory discussed its principles adapted for purposes, by proposing four rules that stand hierarchical order: Skopos rule (i.e. fact should be determined purpose), cohesion internally coherent as text), coherence target audience given their presupposed background knowledge socio-cultural circumstances), correspondence there intersemiotic between source text AD). Then, presents case study which it demonstrated how aspects may have an impact on describer’s choices both terms form AD, one film different ADs depending audiences intended purposes. All all, argued functionalism general particular applied provide theoretical conceptualisation but more importantly, serve practical tool effective well translation scripts.
